The Incredible Color Of The Sapucaias

In these spring months the flowering plants are plentiful, but the Lecythis pisiis, as it is classified scientifically, is really remarkable

The incredible color of the sapucaias: Lecythis

Sapucaia (Lecythis pisiis)

In October, in the humid and dense forests, from Ceará to Rio de Janeiro, its pink bud blends with purple-violet flowers transforming its globose and dense canopy into a gigantic bouquet ton south ton. It stands out in the Zona da Mata and the banks of the rivers São Francisco, Jaguaribe, Piranhas-Açú, Capibaribe, Acaraú, Curimataú, Mundaú, Paraíba, Itapecuru, Mearim and Una, in the northeastern region and in the rivers Doce, Itapemirim, Itaúnas, Jucu, São Mateus, Paraíba do Sul and Itabapoana, Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, among others.

The show, which nature gives hard by the end of this month and in November, already without flowers, the foliage shows green blending discreetly with the other trees. The bucket-bush, as it is also known, belongs to the lecitidaceae family, such as the jequitibá and Brazil nut, as well as three hundred species of woody plants. After this scene the spectacle continues, with the tree displaying its fruits that keep between six and twelve very delicious nuts that, unfortunately, are not commercialized because of the low production and the avid monkeys-saua that do everything to obtain them. They twist the cumbucas, still closed as if they were to pull them to hasten the maturation and when these fruits begin to open themselves, they beat against each other so that the chestnuts are released. The caboclos tell us that these little monkeys weigh about a pound and are skilful jumpers, rarely thrust their hand inside the cumbuca, fearing to hold it inside when it is closed and full of chestnuts. Hence the old saying "old monkey does not lay his hand on cumbuca".

Fruit of the sapucaia

It's worth cultivating, even though it takes about eight years to bloom. In full sun does not exceed 12 meters in height. However, within the forest, specimens of more than 30 meters can be seen. Landscapists should be careful to plant it in rich, well-irrigated soils, respecting the fact that the sapucaia can not stand cold. As its fruits are heavy it is prudent that it develops away from roads and roofs, avoiding accidents, even though the best way to contemplate it is to a certain distance and forming part of a grouping composed of other trees, with different structures and shades.

It is to be wondered that this tree is not an important part of the landscaping projects, since the magnificence of its canopy does not find similar shades in the tropics.
