Types of glass for balcony
There are two main types of balcony glass: tempered and laminated. Which one is better? The recommendation of Standard NBR 16259, which deals exclusively with the standard standards for glazing of balconies, recommends the use of tempered glass, a more resistant and safe type.
Tempered glass receives this name because it undergoes a heat treatment process, where it is subjected to high temperatures - 650ºC and 700ºC - and then receives jets of cold air to cause a thermal shock. This treatment makes the tempered glass up to six times more resistant to breaking than ordinary glass and even if an accident happens the glass does not generate shrapnel, but rather fragments into small pieces.
Tempered glass also has a higher resistance to wind pressure, which is why it is most recommended for glazing of balconies in apartments and regions of high winds.
The laminated glass consists of two or more glass plates joined by a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) screen. This type of glass, much used in car windshields, is less resistant, but when it breaks, the shrapnel gets trapped in the PVB screen. The norm NBR 16259 considers the use of this type of glass only in regions where the incidence of winds is smaller and in low balconies, that is, laminated glass is not a good option for balconies of apartments.
Of course, to ensure the total security of the balcony you prefer tempered glass.
Care and cleaning
The not so cool part of the glass balcony is that it requires constant care and cleaning to stay beautiful and functional. Cleaning can be done with only mild soap and water and a lint-free cloth. To clean the rails through which the glasses run use a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth. But remember to always keep the cleaning up to enjoy your balcony in the best possible way.
How much does a glass balcony cost?
The price of a glass balcony depends on some factors that can make the project more expensive or cheaper. One is the type of opening on the balcony. The most common and financially viable is the type of running. You can also choose to open the door type, which requires a larger free area inside the balcony, or also by the opening to rotate, where the leaves open fully.
The use of aluminum or stainless steel in the profile of the balcony also interferes in the final price, being that the stainless steel is a material of superior cost to the aluminum. And finally, the color of the glass also impacts the budget of the balcony. Currently there are options of fume glass balcony, green glass balcony and colorless glass balcony. If you want to save a little, give preference to the colorless glass.
The budget to determine the price of the glass balcony will also depend on the size of the space to be covered by the glass, the larger, more expensive. But, on average, be prepared to shell out at least $ 500 per square meter.
