How to Grow Calceolaria

It is a delicate plant, special for crops in greenhouses and taken to well-illuminated interiors during flowering.

The culture substrate should be well particulate, well drained and rich in organic matter.

Use pots of size of 25 centimeters with wide mouth, preferably of ceramic.

Protect the inside of the vessel with concrete waterproofing paint, two coats, allowing to dry well for solvent evaporation.

Put some gravel or a piece of geomanta in the bottom and a handful of construction sand to ensure the drainage of the waterings.

Place the substrate made from a mixture of earthworm humus, organic compost and sand in equal parts, adding one to two tablespoons of dry and used coffee powder, as this allows a greater amount of air in the substrate, benefiting the roots.

The coffee powder can be replaced with perlite.

Plant the seedling and firm in place, watering next. The watering should be regular, and the substrate should be tested with the fingers to test the humidity. Avoid excessive humidity.

Seedlings and Propagation of Venus Boots

calceolaria

The propagation can be done by seeds that will be collected from the already dried flowers. Sowing should be done on a porous substrate, as a sieved organic compound.

The seeds are very small, so when sowing, mix with already used dry coffee powder to avoid overlapping.

The germination occurs around ten days and the transplantation for individual vines only when presenting many leaves, facilitating the handling.

Flowering will occur one year after sowing and cultivation should be in a place protected from the sun and rain.

Another way to get seedlings is by cutting, that is, by removing leaves and small stems from seedlings already without the flowers. Place the stake slightly sloped into slightly damp sand, covering the container with a clear plastic bag to prevent the substrate from drying out.

Transplant for individual containers when you have some leaves - sign that your roots have already developed more. Make sure you are carrying the clod together without discovering the roots.

Landscaping and Decorative Use

Suitable for ornamentation of well-lit interiors at the time of its flowering.

It causes beautiful effect next to only green plants, like philodendrons.
They are plants of cold climate or of altitude.
